In a study published in the medical journal Lancet Medical, researchers tracked over 47,000 men who had no history of gout for 12 years. Men who drink the most alcohol daily are doubly at risk of developing the disorder than men who did not drink. Beer drinkers increased their risk by 50% for each daily meal. While those who drank strong alcohol increased their risk by 15% for each drink. Men who drank wine did not appear to increase the risk of gout. Although few men had more than two glasses of wine daily, these results are less convincing. This is why alcohol is not allowed for gout.
Researchers believe that beer consumption leads to gout due to its high purine content. Through the digestion process, the purine compound breaks down to form uric acid. Usually uric acid leaves the body through urine. But if the kidneys are not able to process all uric acid, blood levels become too high. Uric acid can then form crystalline deposits in the joints. These deposits cause gout. Beer was more likely to be associated with gout than with alcohol, and alcohol, in turn, was more than wine.
