Arthritis is a disease that causes inflammation (swelling) of the joints. This is one of the most common chronic diseases that cause disability in older people. Joint pain, swelling, and stiffness are common symptoms of arthritis. There are about 100 different types of arthritis with their respective causes and treatment. Arthritis treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation. In this article, we consider whether red wine can be used for arthritis.

One of the interesting natural remedies for arthritis is red wine. Red wine has an interesting and powerful antioxidant called resveratrol, which can help relieve arthritis symptoms and stop its progression. The polyphenolic compounds present in red wine have an anti-inflammatory property that helps reduce the painful symptoms of arthritis. Resveratrol has been found to be a protective agent in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Resveratrol, the most active ingredient in red wine, has anti-inflammatory activity. It can prevent osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis by reducing the production of inflammatory mediators and modulating the immune response. The release of an inflammatory mediator, such as granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), is inhibited, which reduces the symptoms of pain and swelling in patients with arthritis.

Some studies show that resveratrol is a specific inhibitor of the nuclear factor kappa B and TNF-alpha, which initiates inflammation in patients with arthritis.

Red wine is a natural antimicrobial agent. Polyphenols in red wine have a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, etc.

It stops the synthesis of vascular endothelial growth factor (a signaling protein that stimulates the formation of blood vessels), which inhibits the activation of kinases (phosphorylating enzyme) in osteoblasts (cells that produce bone protein). This prevents damage to the cartilage.

Resveratrol has a chemopreventive effect in rheumatoid arthritis.

Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant that inhibits the excessive growth of fibroblast-like synoviocytes with rheumatoid arthritis (RA-FLS). RA-FLS are a specialized type of cell present inside the synovial joints responsible for RA since it initiates inflammation, which can lead to bone destruction.

Hyperplastic growth (an increase in tissue that leads to cell proliferation) RA-FLS is a characteristic feature of rheumatoid arthritis. It inhibits proliferation and initiates apoptosis (death) of RA-FLS.

The addition of resveratrol in the diet has been found to be protective against rheumatoid arthritis because it reduces the amount of cytokine (an inflammatory mediator) induced by a neutrophil (an immune cell responsible for inflammation) by a chemoattractant (a chemical that attracts neutrophil) in the patient’s serum. There was a significant decrease in knee edema.  

Red wine for gout.

Resveratrol has been found to be effective against gouty arthritis caused by precipitation of monosodium urate crystals, thereby increasing the amount of uric acid in the patient.

It inhibits joint inflammation (joint inflammation) and reduces serum uric acid levels. This may be useful in treating gouty arthritis, as it can prevent recurring acute attacks of gouty arthritis.

Red wine prevents the progression of the disease with osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is characterized by inflammation and bone loss. Resveratrol treatment has been shown to preserve the structure of articular cartilage (white tissue that covers the end of the bone) and subchondral bone (a plate present below articular cartilage). 

Red wine improves metabolism:

Consuming red wine in moderation improves the body’s overall metabolism. It lowers blood glucose. It regulates body weight if taken in small quantities and maintains the glycemic index of the body.
