Epsom Salt was named after the bitter source of salt found in Epsom, England, where it was produced in the springs. The name of the mixture can sometimes be misleading, as it is not real salt. Instead, it is a type of mineral compound consisting of magnesium and sulfate. Epson salt has long been used for various health benefits and other purposes, such as beauty, gardening, etc. It has also been used to treat various types of diseases and ailments.

The main components of Epsom salt are magnesium and sulfate, which play an important role in its unique healing properties. The most common form in which salt is used is the Epsom salt bath, where the salt is mixed with bathwater. A person should take this bath for some time, and magnesium sulfate compounds are absorbed into the skin. How to treat arthritis with salt?




Magnesium is one of the main compounds needed by the human body for the daily regulation of numerous pathways. It is known that it regulates more than 325 enzymes and pathways. It is also necessary for other vital functions, such as the proper functioning of muscles and nerves, preventing hardening of the arteries and reducing the amount of inflammation caused by numerous health conditions, including arthritis.

The sulfate found in the Epsom salt also plays a vital role in imparting the compound to medicinal properties. These sulfates help absorb nutrients, treat headaches caused by migraines, and detoxify toxins by washing them out of the body. 

Magnesium sulfate belongs to the category of inorganic compounds. Heptahydrate-sulfate mineral epsomite is another name for Epsom salt. When taking Epsom’s salt bath, it was discovered that the heat released in the water helps increase blood circulation and reduce the swelling caused by arthritis. Magnesium in Epsom salts is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties. Epsom salt can also be consumed as part of the treatment.

How to treat arthritis with salt? A study conducted on rat models caused by magnesium deficiency showed that this deficiency led to an increase in inflammatory components in cells and tissues.

It was noted that after three weeks of magnesium deficiency, an increase in the total number of inflammatory cytokines was observed. These inflammatory cytokines included interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a). It has been noted that neuronal tachykinin is produced from nerve tissue, leading to the formation of these inflammatory cytokines.

In another study, the effect of MgSO4 on rat models artificially induced with collagenase-induced osteoarthritis was studied. They based their study on reports that magnesium reduces the need for analgesics for knee surgery.

After artificial induction by collagenase, destruction of the cartilage of the knee joints was observed, and inflammation was observed in the synovial tissues. In addition to this, an increase in cartilage degeneration was also observed. Subsequently, the state of osteoarthritis was induced in rat models, which lead to the formation of osteophytes in the joints. It is known that during osteoarthritis, inflammation occurs in the synovial fluid.

These animal models were then treated with intravenous MgSO4 and a decrease in cartilage degradation was observed. In addition to this, a significant reduction in synovial fluid inflammation was observed. Another point that the authors noted that most people with osteoarthritis experience pain near the joints, however, there have been many cases where people were sick in neighboring and other parts of the body due to osteoarthritis.

Other characteristic conditions of osteoarthritis included mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia. Allodynia is a term for pain that occurs in other places, then a stimulated area, while hyperalgesia means an increase in sensitivity to pain, which can be caused by nerve damage.  


However, all symptoms of allodynia and hyperalgesia decreased after treatment with MgSO4. Moreover, this study reported an increase in the concentration of glutamate in the synovial fluid in the arthritic state of the inflamed knees. When the amount of magnesium in the body is less, this glutamate binds to NMDA receptors, which lead to allodynia and hyperalgesia. In the treatment of Mg 2+, it has been observed that these ions have a prophylactic effect on the binding of glutamate to these receptors.

In addition to this, the researchers reported that magnesium deficiency can lead to the regulation of interleukins 1 and 6 (IL – 1 and IL – 6), cytokines, and joint inflammation. The study reported that an increase in IL – 1 can lead to bone cancer in animal models by regulating a factor known as p – NR1. Scientists have found that, with magnesium ion treatment, there was a downregulation of p-factor NR1, which reduced the risk of developing bone cancer in patients with osteoarthritis.

Finally, the study also reported that the progression of osteoarthritis is also associated with an increase in apoptosis of chondrocytes. Collagenase induced apoptosis or cell death in chondrocytes, which, in the treatment of MgSO4, were suppressed in rat models. Thus, the addition of magnesium to the body slowed the progression of osteoarthritis in the body.
