Climate plays a big role on gout sufferers.

Tukhina Negi, MD from the Boston University School of Medicine, estimated the relationship between weather and the risk of recurring gout in 619 people who already suffered from gout with an average age of 54 years, but between the ages of 21 and 88. The study indicated that the risk of developing gout is 43% when a temperature of 10 – 15 degrees Celsius increased to 21 – 26 degrees. When the temperature dropped from -1 to 4 degrees Celsius to less than -1 degrees; were considered with a reduced risk of developing a gout attack by 25% and 40%, respectively. Researchers have also noticed a connection between temperature and humidity. They found that there was a two-fold increased risk of a gout attack when the temperature was above 21 degrees Celsius and the humidity index was below 60% compared to when the temperature was 10 – 20 degrees Celsius. 

So what does a gout sufferer do

Maintaining a regular temperature in your body, although the weather changes dramatically, is the key to preventing an attack of gout. It is important when the weather changes towards heat and humidity in order to maintain hydration. Because you lose more water when it’s hot, drink often because water will help your body maintain a constant temperature. If possible, try to get air conditioning in your home and car, this will help you a lot.

When the weather changes to cold, you definitely need to keep warm. If you can move to a warm area in winter, this will be good for you. If you are not sure how to dress when you go out, put on an extra layer of socks to keep your feet warm and dress in layers. Drink warm drinks like coffee or your favorite tea to warm your body and raise your body temperature. Keep moving in cold weather, it will produce heat in the body, and since you are more active, it will improve blood circulation. At home, make sure you have heating, or at least electronic blankets, to keep your body warm at night when it’s coldest. Regardless of hot or cold weather, take the necessary precautions and avoid this painful attack of gout. Gout and weather see above
